Forty, Somewhere Between Celebration and Uncertainty
As I look ahead to spending time with more family and friends at a gathering at the end of the month, I'm reminding myself that I don't need to have everything figured out to enjoy turning 40.

A Different Kind of Birthday
Well, I've officially entered my forties.
I celebrated my 40th birthday with my wife and daughters, enjoying a delicious meal, some chocolate cake, and gifts afterward. It was a great evening, and I'm looking forward to celebrating with more family and friends on the 30th.
I've also received plenty of thoughtful birthday wishes, and I genuinely appreciate everyone who has taken the time to reach out.
But I'd be lying if I said this birthday has felt quite like I expected.
It's not that turning 40 bothers me. It's that I'm navigating an unexpected career transition at the same time, and the pressure of finding my next opportunity has made it a little harder to fully embrace the milestone.
The Ups and Downs of Uncertainty
Something I've learned over the past several weeks is that a job search doesn't really stop when you close your laptop.
There are days when things feel like they're moving in the right direction. A great interview, an encouraging conversation, or an opportunity that seems like a genuinely good fit can give you a real sense of optimism.
Then there are the quieter days. The ones where you're waiting to hear back, wondering how a conversation went, or trying to decide whether to follow up again.
It's not necessarily discouragement. Sometimes it's just the frustration of putting so much effort into something without knowing when that effort will pay off.
And even when you're enjoying time away from the search, those thoughts have a way of sneaking back in.
Forty Years of Perspective
Turning 40 naturally brings some reflection.
I've spent a lot of years building a career, working with great people, and taking on challenges that have helped me grow. Outside of work, I've built a life with a family I love and experiences that mean far more to me than any job title.
I'm proud of those things.
But it's interesting how uncertainty about what's next can sometimes make it harder to appreciate everything that's already happened.
I know my experience and accomplishments haven't disappeared because of a layoff. I know there's more to who I am than my career.
Still, knowing those things and feeling completely confident about the future don't always go hand in hand.
Making Room to Celebrate
As I look ahead to spending time with more family and friends at a gathering at the end of the month, I'm reminding myself that I don't need to have everything figured out to enjoy turning 40.
The job search will continue. There will be more applications, conversations, and probably some waiting along the way.
But there are also moments worth being present for, and people worth celebrating with.
I'm grateful for the birthday wishes, the encouragement, and the support I've received throughout this transition.
I don't know exactly what the next chapter holds, but I'm looking forward to finding out.
And in the meantime, I think there's still room for another piece of chocolate cake.
